Makeup Tips for Redheads

By Valerie Mellema

Wearing makeup is a lot like a work of art, it needs to be subtle and natural. You want it to blend together and look like you aren’t wearing any. The key to makeup is that it is supposed to highlight your features, not make you look like a clown. If you are a natural red head, you have paler skin than most women do. Makeup may be a little harder for you to wear, if you don’t pick out the right colors.

Rest assured a redhead can wear makeup. Look at Nicole Kidman and Susan Sarandon; they wear makeup all the time. They make sure to keep it simple and attractive. If you have natural red hair like they do, then you know that the first key to makeup is to wear sun screen under it. Applying sun screen is important because your skin is so fair. You want to protect it well.

The next step is to find the right foundation that matches your skin hues and color. You can do this by going to a department store and letting them help you match the right foundation. You want to make sure that you blend it in well and not let it cake up on your face. After you have applied your foundation you may want to add a little color to your cheeks. Peach and coral are soft colors that will bring out your cheeks.

If you want to wear eye makeup, stay away from blue, reds and pink. These colors went out in the seventies and are not attractive on redheads. The best colors for your eyes are the earthy tones. Look for browns, beige’s, coppers and honey to accentuate your hair color and eyes. If you want to wear eyeliner, then brown is also the best color for this. Line your eye lightly and then smudge it on the end.

Lipstick is one of a woman’s favorite things to apply. If you are a red head, pink and bright red lipstick is not for you. Again, you want to bring out your hair’s beauty. Go for some deep colors like raisin, brick red and brownish reds. Other colors that you can get away with are orange browns, sheers and soft beiges. Makeup should be worn to bring out your beauty, not hide it.
